Power of Repentance
Most believers in Jesus Christ usually ask the question: Why do I need to repent
for past sins since we are now new creatures in Christ and old things are passed
away? To proper answer this question, we look at what repentance means.
Repentance is agreeing with God that I (and my family) have committed the sin
(iniquity or transgression) He is highlighting to me, and I (or we) am (or are)
guilty; asking for His mercy and forgiveness; and asking for His cleansing from
that sin (iniquity or transgression); and receiving grace to walk in the
righteousness of God. According to 1 John 1:8-10 (TPT),
“
If we boast that we
have no sin, we’re only fooling ourselves and are strangers to the truth. But if
we freely admit our sins when his light uncovers them,he will be faithful to
forgive us every time. God is just to forgive us our sins because of Christ, and he
will continue to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
If we claim that we’re not
guilty of sin when God uncovers it with his light, we make him a liar and his word
is not in us.” So, yes we need to repent for our sins when the Holy Spirit reveals
them to us. As believers, we are not perfect, and will make mistakes (sin) as we
mature in Christ. This is why we need to continually renew our mind, although
our spirit has been made alive unto God.
In addition, if we do not repent for our sins, they give the Accuser legal rights
against us before our God (Matt.5:25). Like our Lord Jesus Christ says here, we
need to agree with the adversary (or accuser) quickly, and then repent for what
was done that prompted the adversary’s charge against us. Our Father God is
not telling us to repent because He is high and almighty. He is telling us to
repent because through repentance, we apply the blood of Jesus Christ that has
been shed for the remission of our sins, while nullifying, severing and destroying
the legal rights the Accuser (Satan, the adversary) has against us before our
Father. As our Father, He deals with us as His children. But He is also the just
Judge, Jehovah Shaphat, and operates courts in Heaven where the Accuser
(who is legalistic) accuses us before Him day and night, based on the legal
rights we gave to him through unrepented sins (Isaiah 33:22; Rev.12:10). The
just Judge does not show partiality (Rom.2:11), although He can make decrees
based on His sovereign mercy.
In Matthew 26:28 (NKJV), Jesus says, “For this is My blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” Additionally, “And he went into
all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the
remission of sins,” (Luke 3:3 NKJV). Remission is defined as the cancellation of a
debt, charge, or penalty, as well as forgiveness of sins. Putting them together,
we can use the shed-blood of Jesus Christ, applied through repentance, to
cleanse and clear us of any accusation or charge the Accuser may have against

us before the just Judge. Our Lord Jesus Christ already shed His blood for us;
we are the ones to apply (or use) what He has so freely done for and given to us.
In the same way, although Jesus Christ gave His life for our salvation, people
have to still willingly repent of their sins and receive Him into their lives. Jesus
already did the work for us by shedding His blood for our freedom; all we need to
do is apply it through repentance to have and enjoy that freedom on earth
(Isaiah 53:5).
Another question most believers in Jesus Christ also ask about repentance is:
Why repent for the sins of another person or past members of my family or
bloodlines? Our God Almighty deals with humans multi-generationally. In
Genesis 17:7 (AMP), God says to Abraham, “I will establish My covenant
between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their
generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your
descendants after you.” In the same way, demonic gods copy what God does
and pervert it for evil (Matt.4:1-11).
Our past generations, or ancestors, from Adam and Eve to present, in one way
or the other entered into covenants, agreements, ties, dedications,
trades/transactions, and/or associated with demonic gods through idolatry,
witchcraft, rebellion against God, and other forms of iniquities. With each next
generation, unrepented iniquities get worse. For example, Abraham lied about
his identity to Pharoah. Isaac did the same thing. By the time it got to the next
generation, Jacob tricked his father into giving him the blessing. Jacob was
good at treachery until he encountered God who transformed him from Jacob to
Israel (Gen.32:22-32). To prove that evil covenants or agreements are speaking
in your life, take a look at the repeated patterns of mishap in your life or in the
lives of your relatives, as well as your family history. For instance, you are
suffering high blood pressure. Your parents had it, as well as some of your
siblings and uncles or aunts. Your doctor concludes that it ‘runs’ in your family.
That is evidence of evil covenants or agreements speaking in your life because a
curse cannot land without a cause (Deut.28:15).
The kingdom of darkness operates on laws, sadly set up by God to govern His
creation, but they do so in a perverted way to propagate evil in the earth.
Therefore, when we or our ancestors entered into covenants and agreements
with demonic principalities and powers, our generations were brought under
those covenants and agreements (just like God did with Abraham and his
generations after him); whether we knew it or not is irrelevant. This is the reason
Jesus could not come to the world through the seed of a man but of God. If He
By Dr. Jay | 3
had come through a seed of man, He would have been born into the iniquities of
His past generations, and not qualify as the Lamb that takes away the sins of the
whole world. When David repented for the adultery and murder he committed,
he reminded God that, “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my
mother conceive me.” (Psalm 51:5).
What is iniquity? Iniquity can be defined as an action and the nature of (or heart
behind) that action that goes against God and His ways; such actions and their
nature are perverted, corrupt or plain evil as they are rooted in demonic spirits
and the flesh. Iniquity portrays the ways of the flesh (which is in constant enmity
with God) but rooted in the ways of the kingdom of darkness. The flesh and the
kingdom of darkness cannot offer any good thing, as ‘good’ only originates from
God, who is GOOD. They can only offer perverted or corrupt ‘good’; they can
only offer evil.
In general, examples of generational iniquities include shedding of innocent
blood, mingling of bloods, treachery, use and abuse of others, rebellion,
idolatry, sorcery, divination, occultism (which is still idolatry because it is a form
of profane worship), greed, fear, and sexual perversion. All bloodlines, from
Adam to present, have forms of these iniquities manifesting as acts being
committed or suffering from the consequences of the unrepented iniquities.
Looking at blood pressure that was illustrated previously, it could be tied to fear
and trauma you or members of your bloodlines used to control, intimidate or
abuse other people. Since the iniquity is not repented for, the blood of Jesus
Christ did not wash it away or cover it, so the Accuser can use it against you or
members of your bloodlines in the Court of Heaven to inflict fear and trauma on
you, which may manifest as high blood pressure. This is not God’s original
design for our bodies, and Jesus Christ already paid the price in full for our
healing and wholeness. So why not apply what Christ has already accomplished
for our freedom, healing and restoration. Repentance can help us achieve that.
Always remember that in as much as God is our Father, He is also Lord of the
harvest and the just Judge over all of creation, who does not show partiality in
His courts (which is where the Accuser presents his cases against us). In Isaiah
14:21 (MSG), the Lord says, “Get a place ready to slaughter the sons of the
wicked and wipe out their father’s line. Unthinkable that they should own a
square foot of land or desecrate the face of the world with their cities!” In
addition, God says in Exodus 34:6-7 (NKJV), “And the Lord passed before him
and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering,
and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving
iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the
By Dr. Jay | 4
iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third
and the fourth generation.” Long before it gets to the fourth generation, the
forces of darkness already have the covenants renewed several times due to
unrepented iniquities.
Another reason we are to repent for not just our own unrighteousness, but for
that of others is because we are Christ’s royal priests, appointed and ordained
by God in the order of Melchizedek. “But you are a chosen generation, a royal
priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the
praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light, (1 Peter
2:9).” Priests offer sacrifices for their own sins and those of other people. For
every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things
pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins (Hebrews
5:1, NKJV). But we offer sacrifices for sins by applying the blood of Jesus Christ
through repentance.
In closing, we have absolutely nothing to lose by repenting for our sins and the
sins of others. The truth is that if repentance will give us access to have and
enjoy in the earth all that Jesus paid the price in full for us, do you not think that
the Accuser will rather we are ignorant of it? Let us not continue to perish
(suffer) due to lack of knowledge, but rather take advantage of the revelations
the Holy Spirit is giving to us. Let us pray like Daniel did when he prayed for God
to forgive him and his ancestors in Daniel chapter 9:
3 Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and
supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.
4 And I prayed to
the Lord my God, and made confession, and said, “O Lord, great and
awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love
Him, and with those who keep His commandments,
5 we have sinned and
committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing
from Your precepts and Your judgments.
6 Neither have we heeded Your
servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings and our
princes, to our fathers and all the people of the land.
7 O
Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this
day—to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel,
those near and those far off in all the countries to which You have driven
them, because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against
You.

“O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, our princes, and our
fathers, because we have sinned against You.

Him.
10 We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in His
laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets.
11 Yes, all Israel
has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice;
therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of
God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him.
12 And He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against
our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great disaster; for under
the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to
Jerusalem.
13
“As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon
us; yet we have not made our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might
turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth.
14 Therefore
the Lord has kept the disaster in mind, and brought it upon us;
for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works which He does, though we
have not obeyed His voice.
15 And now, O Lord our God, who brought Your
people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and made Yourself a
name, as it is this day—we have sinned, we have done wickedly!
16
“O Lord, according to all Your righteousness, I pray, let Your anger and
Your fury be turned away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain;
because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and
Your people are a reproach to all those around us.
17 Now therefore, our
God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and for the
Lord’s sake
[a]cause Your face to shine on
[b]Your sanctuary, which is
desolate.
18 O my God, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes and see
our desolations, and the city which is called by Your name; for we do not
present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but
because of Your great mercies.
19 O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord,
listen and act! Do not delay for Your own sake, my God, for Your city and
Your people are called by Your name.” (NKJV)
P.S: After repentance, we need to do release FORGIVENESS to ourselves and
others.
